Decarbonization with a focus on energy reduction remains one of the foremost priorities for PSA. The Group Sustainability team leads the implementation of decarbonization initiatives, coordinating efforts across the group between regions and business units to achieve PSA’s goals.
Globally, we established the Climate Response Management System (CRMS) to align our climate initiatives and focus our efforts on four key areas: greenhouse gases, energy, water and waste.

We achieved over 77% of electrification or hybridisation of all cranes, where the goal for 2030 is 90%.

In 2023, PSA’s Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions was 702 kTCO2e in total. This represents a 6% decrease from 2022’s levels. This was due to the deployment of green projects across PSA portfolio, as well as lower energy consumption from reefer volume and lesser container dwell days. Against our baseline year of 2019, PSA’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions has reduced by 7%.
It is imperative for PSA Antwerp to maintain its pivotal role in supporting the group's pursuit of the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal objectives. Through a concerted effort to transform our operations and foster unity among our workforce in pursuit of environmental goals, we are able to align with international standards and to go beyond of what is legally required.
Through our locally established Climate Response Management System and our Energy Transition Plan we generate a systematic approach to curb emissions, introduce sustainable initiatives, and ultimately achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

This new project set to finish in 2032 will result in a projected reduction of 58% C02 emission per container at our Europa Terminal, compared to 2019. As part of the project, most of the diesel-driven straddle carriers are to be replaced with fully electric stacking cranes (ASC's). This contributes to both reaching the 2050 net zero emissions target, as well as enhanced dock worker safety.

The hybrid straddle carriers have become the new standard for new purchases since 2021. With the implementation of this policy, our terminals will gain a 25% fuel reduction, hence creating a 25% emission improvement.

Through the Green Straddle Carrier Program, the world’s first H2 dual fuel straddle carrier was launched in the Port of Antwerp. Using state-of-the-art H2 dual fuel combustion engine technology, the machine runs on a mix of hydrogen and diesel.
The testing for 100% electric straddle carriers has also begun. The e-straddles are equipped with state-of-the-art battery technology and is therefore capable of uninterrupted operation at peak performance for more than four hours. These e-straddles run 100% on batteries and take approximately 90 minutes to fully recharge. This way they can play an important role in the reduction of terminal greenhouse gas emissions in the long run.

Since 2017, all the electrical energy we use in Belgium is a 100% green. Globally, we reduced our carbon emissions by more than 69,000 tonnes of CO2e by adopting green electricity at several business units. This gave a global decrease of 4,6% of all our direct emissions compared to 2021.

Alongside Project Emerald, PSA Antwerp has fabricated an innovative filtration system. As cities grow and concrete becomes ubiquitous, natural water absorption suffers, leading to depleted water levels. To tackle this, PSA has pioneered a smart filtration system. By swapping out concrete for porous gravel around the terminals, and elevating containers on plinths, we enable rainwater to easily seep back into the soil, promoting natural drainage and preserving water resources.
PSA Antwerp has also installed rainwater collection tanks totaling 340,000 liters adjacent to its terminals. These tanks serve the dual purpose of machine cleaning and subsequent sanitary use, resulting in an annual saving of 3,000,000 liters of potable water during operations.

95% of our quay cranes use energy recovering technology. When releasing and braking, energy is emitted, which is collected by the generator. In this way, the cranes use 60% less energy.

In alignment with our commitment to environmental stewardship, PSA Antwerp has implemented a comprehensive 100% electric company car policy, increased the use of electric buses for dockworkers' transportation needs, and encourage the use of leased bikes as a commuting method, which is now used by circa one in four employees.

In our offices, you will not find any single use plastic in terms of excessive trash bags, coffee mugs, cutlery or other daily equipment.

Together with our employees, we organize Go Green campaigns throughout the year, with green activities and initiatives such as the “Terminal clean-up days” and our “Go Green Week”.

In terms of recycling and waste collection, we go beyond of what is legally required. We strive to achieve zero waste to landfill, and therefore encourage our employees to think in an environmentally friendly way every day, e.g. by sorting waste and minimizing the use of paper. Additionally, we are constantly increasing the recycling of our waste stream to achieve circular operations.

Through workshops, training sessions, internal initiatives like the Sustainability Champions meetings, and access to relevant resources reaching all of our employees including management, we empower our team members to deepen their understanding and expertise, equipping them to drive meaningful change both within our organization and beyond.

25 November 2019 - The largest terminal operators in the port of Antwerp are joining forces for the environment again. On Sunday, November 24th, the kick off was given for a joint tree planting, during which 1,250m² of new urban forest was planted at ‘Edegemse Beekvallei’. The trees were planted in collaboration with ‘Natuurpunt’, but also the employees of PSA, MPET and DP World were given the opportunity to lend a helping hand, together with their families.
22 March 2018 | Each year, under the banner of "GO GREEN", PSA ports around the world engage in a diverse range of activities aimed at raising environmental awareness and taking action to conserve, recycle and reduce. This year, we raised 4,650€ for SeaLife. With these funds, a baby seal named 'Margot' was rescued, nurtured and released again into the North Sea. Go Margot!
18 March 2018 | When the pouring rain, hail or snow is spoiling everyone’s day, our Environment Manager Ronny Deroef is delighted. We recently invested in a large-scale installation that collects this heavenly gift. With the free rainwater, the sky high machinery receives an environmentally friendly wash, which saves 3 million liters of drinking water.
31 October 2017 | PSA Antwerp, MPET and ATS are collaborating on the construction of three large underground storage tanks, which will be used for the collection and the storage of rainwater for the washing of terminal equipment. With these storage tanks, we expect to conserve up to 3 million litres of potable water annually.
Each year, PSA launches the annual Go Green Fortnight, a Group-wide green initiative aimed at promoting environmental awareness and action within our global family. During this period, all PSA companies and staff around the world are encouraged to contribute towards creating environmentally-friendly work communities.
Antwerp's largest terminal operators join hands to support GO GREEN, a campaign from Global Ports Group in which the largest players in the global port community are represented.
PSA Antwerp / MPET and DP World will jointly set up a campaign focussing on ECO-driving. Additionally, the terminal operators jointly planted a tree, which represented the symbolic start of the 'Plant a Tree'-action. With this initiative, PSA Antwerp / MPET will offer a tree to all employees to plant at home.
As PSA strongly believes in the importance of taking care of the environment, we have launched a new initiative to sensitize our staff and to 'greenify' our daily environment: all PSA Antwerp & MPET employees were offered a small buxus tree to plant at home.
That way, we hope to create our own symbolic 'PSA/MPET forest', enhancing our joint effort to create a sustainable and greener future.
After the hand-out, employees immediately started sharing pictures of the trees, which they planted at home, nearby our terminals or in a forest or park nearby.
In 2014, PSA Antwerp invested significantly in making its car and machine fleet greener by purchasing 11 electric quay cars and 2 hybrid straddle carriers. Using these electric cars (Renault Zoë), PSA Antwerp can lower its environmental impact by 29.53 tonnes of CO² emission per year.
