World's third-largest container ship welcomed at PSA Noordzee Terminal
20 July 2023 - 'ONE Innovation', Ocean Network Express's (ONE) striking new flagship, sailed into the port of Antwerp and docked at PSA's Noordzee Terminal yesterday. With a capacity of 24,136 TEU, a length of 399.90 metres and a width of 61.4 metres, and its striking pink magenta colour, ONE Innovation, the world's third-largest container ship, certainly made an impression.
General manager at PSA Antwerp Jurgen De Wachter boarded the Megamax vessel, met the captain and was given a short tour of the ship. "We at PSA are of course always proud when we can welcome such big vessels. This ship is also unique because it can load 25 40-foot containers in their length. We even worked with six cranes this morning to load and unload the ship. In total, PSA will handle 3,855 containers from the One Innovation."
The ONE Innovation is the first of six container ships in ONE's HMM Megamax 24-class series. Tomorrow, the ship will already continue its course to the port of Southampton.
Upgrading Europa Terminal
The arrival of the ONE Innovation shows once again the importance of upgrading the Europa Terminal, one of PSA's other terminals. "The current maximum there is a vessel of about 330 metres in length that can carry approximately 10,600 containers," De Wachter continued. "That number is going to more than double once the works have been completed. Nowadays the largest ships, like the ONE Innovation, are around 400 metres long and can carry up to 24,000 containers. In the future, those ships will also be able to dock at the Europa terminal. We see this as an essential project for growth. We are going from a maximum capacity of 1.7 million TEU to 2.4 million."
