Record container throughput for PSA Antwerp and MPET
21 December 2017 | On 21 December 2016, PSA Antwerp and MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET) jointly achieved for the first time in the terminal’s history a record container throughput of 10 million TEUs in one year. The 10 MTEU water-bound containers include both sea-going and inland navigation volumes.
With the move of MPET operations and the upgrading of the terminals, it has been a challenging year. It is therefore fantastic to be able to round off the year with this milestone accomplishment. Our thanks go to our 3,000 workers who have contributed significantly with their expertise, passion and engagement. We also want to thank all our customers and partners for their continued support and trust in our services.
In the past year, PSA Antwerp has completed a major relocation project in maritime history - moving one of its terminals from Delwaidedok to Deurganckdok. With an annual capacity of 9 MTEU, the MSC PSA European Terminal at Deurganckdok will be the biggest in Europe. It will be equipped with 41 quay cranes.
In order to facilitate this growth within the Antwerp port, over EUR 500 million has been invested in the expansion and the upgrading of the terminals. Besides MPET on the left bank of the river Scheldt, Noordzee Terminal and Europa Terminal on the right bank have also undergone significant expansion and upgrading works to enable them to handle mega container vessels. The milestone throughput countdown started on 20 December 2016 at all PSAA terminals, and the 10 MTEU number was achieved on 21 December 2016, at 9.45 am. The company celebrated with treats and a memento for all employees.
