PSA Antwerp & MPET further expand and upgrade facilities

24 March 2017 | On 23 March the Zhen Hua 24 has arrived in the Antwerp port with on board four mega-cranes of which two are destined for the Noordzee Terminal of PSA Antwerp and two for the MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET). The new cranes are over 130 meters in height and can reach across 25 rows of containers making them fully capable of handling the world’s largest containerships. These dual hoist cranes can handle two 40’ containers or four 20’ containers simultaneously.

 

Today, a second batch of four similar cranes has started its journey on board of the Zhen Hua 20 that is expected to arrive in the Antwerp port in May.  

 

The four cranes for the PSAA Noordzee Terminal form part of an overall upgrading program. With the 12 cranes that will eventually be installed here and the deepening works that were completed last year, the Noordzee Terminal is now fully equipped to meet with the major alliance needs and to handle multiple mega-vessels simultaneously. With the installation of the last four cranes at the MPET Terminal, the relocation and upgrading project for the MPET operations, is coming to completion. The MPET terminals is one of the most important hubs for the 2M alliance in the region. With all 41 cranes installed later this year, MPET will be the single largest container terminal in Europe. 

 

In order to minimize the operational impact and to safeguard our service levels to our shipping line customers, all cranes will be commissioned at the side of the terminals. The cranes will only be shifted to their final location when ready for operations. The first two cranes for Noordzee Terminal and for MPET are expected to be operational in May.
