Mega vessel ready!
In the 1980s, an important step was taken towards securing the continued development of the port of Antwerp. While the entire port had until then been developed behind a series of locks, the decision was made to extend the port further to the north and to construct a terminal in front of the locks.
For ships docking at a terminal in front of the locks, this can quickly add up to time savings of 4 to 6 hours, compared with terminals inside the lock complex.
First, the Europa Terminal was officially opened in 1990. In 1997 a second terminal followed: the Noordzee Terminal. Both terminals are located on the right bank, in front of the locks, and are quite similar in terms of organization and infrastructure.
Noordzee Terminal is well equiped to handle the largest container vessels in the world.
