The first tidal container terminal in the Port of Antwerp
In the 1980s, an important step was taken towards securing the continued development of the port of Antwerp. While the entire port had until then developed behind a series of locks, the decision was made to extend the port further to the north and to construct a terminal in front of the locks.
For ships docking at a terminal in front of the locks, this can quickly add up to time savings of 4 to 6 hours, compared with terminals inside the lock complex.
The Europa Terminal was officially opened in 1990 and was the first tidal container terminal in the Port of Antwerp. In 1997 a second tidal terminal followed: the Noordzee Terminal. Both terminals are located on the right bank and are quite similar in terms of organization and infrastructure.
