'Berlin Express' from Hapag-Lloyd arrives at the North Sea Terminal with an impressive wall of orange containers
4 October 2023 - On October 4, we welcomed the 'Berlin Express' from Hapag-Lloyd to our North Sea Terminal K913. This megamax ship had just come from its christening ceremony in Hamburg and stood out with the impressive wall of orange Hapag-Lloyd containers surrounding it. It was a spectacular sight!
The 'Berlin Express' is not just an ordinary container ship; it's the largest ship ever to sail under the German flag, boasting an impressive length of 400 meters and a capacity of 23,666 TEU. This extraordinary giant belongs to the new Hamburg Express class of Hapag-Lloyd and is the first of a series of ten ships that can operate on non-fossil fuels, such as bio-methane and e-methane, thanks to advanced dual-fuel technology. This will minimize CO2 emissions significantly. For now, it runs on liquefied natural gas (LNG), reducing CO2 emissions by 25 percent and soot emissions by 95 percent.
The 'Berlin Express' will regularly visit our North Sea Terminal as part of THE Alliance's FE3 service, which serves the route between the Far East and Northern Europe. In July, we proudly welcomed the 'ONE Innovation' on this service, and in September, both the 'ONE Infinity,' the 'ONE Integrity,' and the 'Manila Express' (the sister ship of the 'Berlin Express') docked at our terminal. Jurgen De Wachter, General Manager Container Business at PSA, emphasized the significance of the arrival of the 'Berlin Express': "This marks another crucial step in our partnership with THE Alliance, providing us with the opportunity to showcase our efficiency and service quality. Let's take pride in this milestone and continue to deliver excellent service to all ships visiting our terminal."
